Pack profile

Lassen Pack

Region: Southwestern Lassen and northern Plumas counties
Established: 2017
Current summary: The Lassen Pack has produced a litter every year since 2017, including at least two pups in 2025. Its current breeding female, LAS09F, has led the pack since 2021, while LAS16M has sired each litter since 2020. The pack also survived the 2021 Dixie Fire, which burned significant portions of its summer range.

Whaleback Pack

Region: Central and eastern Siskiyou County
Established: 2021
Current summary: The Whaleback Pack has reproduced every year since it was established, producing ten pups in 2025. Breeding male OR85 dispersed from Oregon’s Mount Emily Pack, while breeding female WHA01F is a descendant of OR-7. The pack remains one of California’s largest and most productive.

Harvey Pack

Region: Western Lassen and eastern Shasta counties
Established: 2023
Current summary: The Harvey Pack was confirmed in 2023 after reports and photographs from livestock producers and U.S. Forest Service staff. It produced eight pups in 2024 and seven in 2025. Its breeding female, WHA05F, died during a January 2026 capture operation; the circumstances remain under investigation.

Yowlumni Pack

Region: Eastern Tulare and northern Kern counties
Established: 2023
Current summary: The Yowlumni Pack produced six pups in 2023 and seven in 2024, but no litter was documented in 2025. A sarcoptic mange outbreak affected the pack, and three collared wolves died during 2025. Wolves still occupy the territory, but the pack’s current composition is uncertain.

Diamond Pack

Region: Eastern Plumas and southern Lassen counties near Nevada
Established: 2024
Current summary: The Diamond Pack was confirmed after public and UC Davis cameras photographed a pair in late 2023 and early 2024. Genetic analysis identified the pair as siblings from the Lassen Pack’s 2021 litter. At least two wolves remain present, although reproduction has not been confirmed.

Ice Cave Pack

Region: Eastern Tehama and northwestern Plumas counties
Established: 2024
Current summary: The Ice Cave Pack was confirmed in 2024 after cameras recorded two adults and two pups south of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Six pups were documented in 2025, and genetic work identified a new breeding male, ICE03M. The pack currently ranges across parts of eastern Tehama and northwestern Plumas counties.

Ashpan Pack

Region: Eastern Shasta County north of Lassen Volcanic National Park
Established: 2025
Current summary: The Ashpan Pack was recognized in April 2025 after six months of consistent wolf presence. Its known pair, WHA04F and WHA07M, both came from the Whaleback Pack’s 2021 litter. CDFW confirmed at least two wolves in the area during summer 2025.

Tunnison Pack

Region: Central Lassen County
Established: 2025
Current summary: The Tunnison Pack was first documented during a livestock depredation investigation north of Susanville in fall 2024. Genetic evidence identified LAS32F from the Lassen Pack and TUN01M from Oregon’s Desolation Pack. By summer 2025, the pair was ranging across central Lassen County.

Grizzly Pack

Region: Southern Plumas County
Established: 2025
Current summary: The Grizzly Pack was recognized in late 2025 after monitoring showed that two previously separate activity areas were likely one group. Genetic analysis identified DIS05M and LAS37F as the resident pair. A pup appeared on a remote camera in late summer, indicating successful reproduction.

Interstate Pack

Region: Northwestern Modoc County and the Oregon border
Established: 2026
Current summary: The Interstate Pack was recognized in April 2026 after at least six months of consistent presence near the Oregon border. CDFW has recorded two wolves traveling together there since summer 2025, including male DIS06M. California and Oregon biologists continue joint monitoring because the group may overlap both states.

Region: Southwestern Modoc County
Established: 2026
Current summary: The Whitehorse Pack was recognized in April 2026 following repeated camera, track, scat, and genetic detections. The pair includes male DIS07M and WHA23F, a female from the Whaleback Pack’s 2023 litter. Both were first documented together in southwestern Modoc County in August 2025.

Long Valley Pack

Region: Eastern Sierra County
Established: 2026
Current summary: The Long Valley Pack was recognized in April 2026 after three wolves were genetically confirmed in eastern Sierra County. One was BEY08F, a female that dispersed from the Beyem Seyo Pack; the others traced to the Whaleback Pack and an unknown source. At least two wolves continued to be recorded into 2026.
